02 · Why it matters

It is not a cost decision. It is a control decision.

With open standards, there are no licenses restricting access to your own information, no retention clauses, and no provider that can one day monetize what you created.

Your data, in an open format

Readable by any engine in the ecosystem. If you decide to change providers, your data remains there, in a format any other vendor can read. Exit costs approach zero, not as a sales claim but as an inherent property of the format.

Verifiable sovereignty

The CLOUD Act requires US-based providers to hand over data regardless of where it is stored. In June 2025, Microsoft France acknowledged under oath before the French Senate that it could not guarantee sovereignty even for data hosted in France.

It cannot be switched off

A vendor can discontinue its product and force a costly migration. Open-source code cannot be switched off: even if its sponsor disappears, the code remains yours and the community's. Business continuity is guaranteed.

Transparency

With proprietary software, you depend on a black box. With open-source code, you or a third party can audit exactly what it does: no hidden telemetry and no undisclosed access. Security is demonstrated, not promised.

The most common objection. The answer: a mature market of thousands of companies provides support, implementation, and contractual guarantees for these exact components. Red Hat (IBM) built a multibillion-dollar business solely on open-source software support, and it is the provider Salesforce and SAP rely on.
